How to Substitute Yarn in a Pattern: The Math, Worked Out

Three questions, and they have to be asked in order
Substituting yarn is not one decision. It is three, and they gate each other: get the first wrong and the other two are wasted work.
- Is it the same weight class? The Craft Yarn Council sorts yarn into 8 numbered classes, #0 to #7, and that number is the coarse filter. Same class is fine, one class apart is workable, two is a different fabric.
- Does it knit or crochet at the same gauge? Class is a range; gauge is a number. This is where a swap that passed the first test still fails.
- How much of it do you need? Only ever in yards or meters. The pattern’s skein count belongs to the pattern’s yarn and travels with nothing.

When a substitution works, and when it does not
The verdict comes from two comparisons, and the worse of them wins. The first is the gap between the two CYC classes: none is good, one class is workable with adjustments, two or more is not recommended. The second is the gap in gauge, in stitches per 4 inches: within one stitch is good, up to three is workable, wider than that is a different fabric at pattern gauge.
There is a deliberate quiet rule underneath. The gauge comparison only counts when both gauges were actually measured. Describe either yarn by its class or by a wrap count and the calculator has no measurement for that side — it fills in that class’s middle gauge, which is an average, and refuses to let an average drive the verdict. Half a comparison is not one: a swatch held up against an assumed midpoint reports mostly the midpoint. So a swap with one number measured is settled on class adjacency, the same as a swap with none — which is why the same pair of yarns can rate differently before and after you swatch them both, the point of examples 2 and 3 below.
Four substitutions, worked
Each of these is a real set of numbers put through the calculator. The arithmetic is shown so you can do it on the back of a receipt in a shop with no signal.
1. Same weight class, a bigger skein
The pattern calls for 6 skeins of a 218 yd worsted. You want a worsted that comes in 364 yd, 200 g cakes.
6 × 218 = 1,308 yd of fabric. Same class, so the margin is 10% — 1,439 yd, or 1,316 m. Divide by 364 and round up: 4 cakes, 800 g. The pattern said 6 and the answer is 4, which is the entire argument against treating a skein as a unit of anything.
2. DK for worsted, both picked from the dropdowns
The pattern calls for 8 skeins of a 220 yd worsted for a fitted sweater. You have a DK you love, at 231 yd per 100 g.
8 × 220 = 1,760 yd. One class apart, so the margin steps up to 15% — 2,024 yd, or 1,851 m — and 9 skeins, 900 g. The verdict is “Workable with adjustments”, and the adjustment it means is a size down: 3.75–4.5 mm (US 5–7) for needles, 4.5–5.5 mm (US 7–I-9) for a hook.
3. The same swap, once you have swatched both
Now measure. The worsted really does knit 18 stitches over 4 inches and the DK really does knit 22. Same yarns, same yardages, two real numbers instead of two dropdown picks — and the verdict drops to “Not recommended”, because 4 stitches per 4 inches is a different fabric at pattern gauge, not a hook size.
Look at what did not change: 1,760 yd, 15%, 2,024 yd, 9 skeins. Identical to example 2. The yardage arithmetic runs on the pattern’s stated total and the margin, and gauge enters neither — so measuring changes the verdict and leaves the shopping list alone. Worth knowing in both directions: a loose gauge really does eat more yarn per stitch, and the margin is the only cushion the calculator gives you for it.
4. An unlabeled ball from the stash
The pattern wants 5 skeins of a 210 yd worsted. You have an unlabeled acrylic that wraps 10 times to the inch, at 175 yd per 100 g.
10 wraps puts it in #4 Medium — the same class as the pattern, so “Good substitute”, with a 10% margin. 5 × 210 = 1,050 yd, plus the margin is 1,155 yd, and at 175 yd a ball, that is 7 balls. Note the direction: the pattern asked for 5 and you need 7, because your ball is shorter than the pattern’s. The calculator also flags the thing the wrap count cannot see — wool to acrylic loses the springiness the pattern assumed.

Why the margin is 10% or 15%, and nothing else
The safety margin exists because a stated yardage is an estimate the designer made about their own tension, not a measurement of your project. It takes exactly two inputs, so the whole rule fits in a table.

Generated by running the calculator's engine once per combination. The margin depends on the class gap and the colorwork switch and on nothing else, so these six rows are the complete rule — including the one people miss, which is that stranded colorwork raises the margin even when the yarns match perfectly.
The colorwork row is the one worth acting on. Stranded work carries a second color across the back of the fabric, so a colorwork yoke eats yarn that a plain one does not — and it does that whether or not you changed yarn weight. If your project has stranded sections, take the 15% even on a like-for-like swap.
What a wrap count settles, and what it does not
Wrapping a mystery yarn round a ruler is how you identify it when there is no label to read, and it earns its place. What it gives you is a weight class: 10 wraps to the inch lands in #4 Medium, the same box the pattern’s worsted sits in.
What it does not give you is a gauge. Once the class is picked, the calculator compares gauges using that class’s middle value — 18 stitches per 4 inches for a worsted, halfway between the 16 and 20 that bound the class. That midpoint is an average, so the same quiet rule applies to it as to a dropdown pick: it is not allowed to drive the verdict. Wraps against wraps, wraps against a class, and wraps against a measured swatch are all settled on class adjacency alone — the first two because nothing in the pair was measured, the third because only half of it was, and a real number set against a class midpoint mostly measures the midpoint. A green verdict from wraps alone is a green verdict about the class, not about your fabric; swatch both yarns and the gauge comparison switches on.
Which numbers here are yours, and which are averages
Two kinds of number sit on this page and it is worth knowing which is which before you trust a yardage.
Yours: the pattern’s stated total, your skein’s yardage and grams, and any gauge you measured off a blocked swatch. The arithmetic on those is just arithmetic — the total yards, the margin, the division, the rounding up.
Averages: the weight-class table itself, which publishes ranges because real labels vary; the midpoint gauge the calculator uses whenever a yarn was described by class or by wraps; and the 10 to 15% margins, which are conventions rather than measurements of your project. The same split holds across the whole crochet calculators set, and it is the reason the calculator ends every verdict by telling you to swatch: the swatch is how an average becomes yours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use DK instead of worsted?
Usually, and the calculator says so in the mildest of its three verdicts: one CYC class apart is “Workable with adjustments”, not a refusal. What you are agreeing to is a smaller hook or needle and a denser fabric than the pattern photographed. The calculator hands back 4.5–5.5 mm (US 7–I-9) for a hook and 3.75–4.5 mm (US 5–7) for needles once the substitute is DK, both a size down from the worsted ranges, and you swatch at that size until you hit the pattern's stitch count rather than the yarn's. The decision, in one line: it is a safe swap for a blanket, a scarf or anything unfitted, and a swatch-first swap for anything that has to fit, because a denser stitch than the pattern assumed makes a finished piece smaller and no amount of blocking adds fabric that was never worked.
How do I know how many skeins to buy?
Four steps, none of which involve the pattern's skein count as a unit. Multiply the pattern's skeins by its yards per skein for the total; add the margin (10% for a like-for-like swap, 15% once you cross a weight class or work colorwork); divide by YOUR skein's yards; round up. If the pattern gives meters, divide by 0.9144 to get yards, or work the whole thing in meters — the ratio is what matters, not the unit. If it gives grams and no yardage, you cannot do this arithmetic at all: grams weigh fiber, and a meter of cotton weighs more than a meter of wool. Look up the yardage on the ball band or the manufacturer's page first. Then buy the whole amount in one trip, spare skein included, while the dye lot still matches — a dye lot is not reorderable, and a sleeve knitted three weeks later in a different lot is visible in daylight.
What does WPI mean?
Wraps per inch: how many strands of the yarn fit side by side in one inch. You measure it by wrapping the yarn round a ruler or a pencil for an inch or so — snug, strands touching, not stretched and not squashed — then counting the wraps across a full inch and ignoring the ends. It is the one measurement that works on a ball with no label, on handspun, and on the remains of something you finished two years ago. Treat the count as accurate to within a wrap or two: how hard you pull changes it, and a fuzzy or a plied yarn wraps differently from a smooth single. Thicker yarn means fewer wraps, so the scale runs backwards from what you might expect — in the calculator's table, 9 to 11 wraps is a worsted and 14 to 18 is a fingering. Those ranges meet at their edges on purpose, and a count landing on a shared edge is read as the finer of the two classes — 11 wraps comes back as a DK rather than a worsted, which is worth knowing before you argue with a verdict.
Do I still need to swatch if both yarns are the same weight?
Yes, because a weight class is a range and not a specification. #4 Medium covers everything that knits 16 to 20 stitches over 4 inches, so two yarns can both be honestly labeled worsted and sit 25% apart in stitches across the same width. Work the same stitch count in both and the tighter one comes out 20% narrower, not 25% — the width ratio is the inverse of the stitch ratio — and the calculator cannot see it coming: from the dropdowns it knows the class, not your hands. The swatch is what converts an assumption into a measurement, and once you have swatched both yarns, entering the two measured gauges is what makes the verdict mean something.
