Nen Type Generator

Free Hunter x Hunter Nen type generator: take the water divination test with your name — or the honest personality quiz — to find your Nen type, from Enhancer to the rare Specialist, with your hatsu ability, the canon user you match, and the affinity hexagon.

Quick answer

There are six Nen types — Enhancer, Transmuter, Conjurer, Manipulator, Emitter, and the rare Specialist. In Hunter x Hunter you learn yours with the water divination test: a leaf floats on a glass of water and your aura makes it react. Type your name above to take the test, or switch to the personality quiz — the same name always divines the same type.

What Is My Nen Type?

In Hunter x Hunter, Nen is the art of controlling one’s own life energy — aura — and every user is born with an affinity for one of six categories: Enhancement, Transmutation, Conjuration, Emission, Manipulation, and Specialization. Your category decides which abilities come naturally and, in Togashi’s system, even hints at your personality. In-universe you discover it with the water divination test, and this Nen type generator recreates that test without a teacher: type your name and it hashes into a stable seed, so asking what is my Nen type always returns the same answer for the same name — permanent, comparable, and fun to argue over with friends.

The tool has two modes. The default is the water divination test itself: watch the glass react to your aura before it names your type, hatsu-style ability, and the canon user you match. The second is an honest Nen personality quiz — seven questions scored against the six archetypes, no name seed involved, for when you want the result to come from your answers rather than your name.

The Nen Hexagon: Why Affinity Matters

The six categories sit on a hexagon in the order Enhancement, Transmutation, Conjuration, Specialization, Manipulation, Emission — and how well you can use a category depends on how far it is from your own around that ring. You wield your own type at 100%, the two adjacent categories at about 80%, the two that are two steps away at 60%, and your opposite at only 40%. Specialization is the exception no one can train into — you are either born a Specialist or you are not. That is why an Enhancer trains Emission and Transmutation but rarely masters Conjuration, and why every serious Nen user leans into the abilities their birth category favours. The chart below is built from the exact ring the generator uses, so it can never claim an affinity the tool would contradict.

Aptitude by hexagon distance: 100% for your own category, 80% adjacent, 60% two steps away, 40% opposite. Specialization can only be used by a natural Specialist, so it is unreachable for the other five types regardless of position.

Quiz vs Water Divination: How Yours Is Decided

Most what is my Nen type quizzes ask a pile of questions and quietly bucket you. This tool gives you both honest options. The water divination mode works like the chakra-paper-style test in the series: one input — your name — and one deterministic answer, gated so Specialist stays as rare as it is in canon (roughly 1 in 12), with a chance of a dual affinity leaning to an adjacent type, exactly like the users who sit between two neighbouring categories. The personality quiz mode scores your seven answers against Togashi’s archetypes instead. Either way you get your type, a signature hatsu flavour, your aura output, the canon user you share a category with, and your full affinity hexagon. Frequently Asked Questions

What is my Nen type?

In Hunter x Hunter you find out with the water divination test: float a leaf on a glass of water, channel your aura, and watch what happens. The water rising means Enhancer, its taste changing means Transmuter, impurities appearing means Conjurer, the leaf moving means Manipulator, the colour changing means Emitter, and anything else entirely means the rare Specialist. Outside the story, type your name into the generator above — it divines one of the six types deterministically, so your result is permanent and each friend gets their own. There is also an honest personality quiz mode.

What are the six Nen types?

The six categories of Nen are Enhancement (Kyōka), Transmutation (Henka), Conjuration (Gugenka), Emission (Hōshutsu), Manipulation (Sōsa), and Specialization (Tokushitsu). Every Nen user is born with an affinity for one of them, which shapes both the abilities they can develop and, according to the series, their personality — Enhancers are simple and determined, Transmuters whimsical, Conjurers serious, Manipulators logical, Emitters impatient, and Specialists individualistic.

How does the water divination test work?

A leaf is placed on top of a glass filled with water, and the tester puts their hands around the glass and performs Ren (an outpouring of aura). The way the water reacts reveals the aura type: the volume increases for an Enhancer, the taste changes for a Transmuter, impurities appear for a Conjurer, the leaf moves for a Manipulator, the colour changes for an Emitter, and a completely different, unrelated change marks a Specialist. It is the standard method Nen teachers use to identify a student’s category.

What Nen type is Killua?

Killua Zoldyck is a Transmuter — his aura takes on the property of electricity, which is why his signature techniques mimic lightning. Transmuters change the quality of their aura to imitate something else. Gon, by contrast, is an Enhancer (the water rose in his divination test), Kurapika is a Conjurer whose Scarlet Eyes push him into Specialist territory, Leorio is an Emitter, and Hisoka is a Transmuter with his elastic Bungee Gum.

What is the rarest Nen type?

Specialization is the rarest and most mysterious category. Unlike the other five, it cannot be reached by training — a Specialist is simply born to it, and Specialization sits at the far point of the hexagon from Enhancement, unreachable for everyone else. That is why the generator gates a Specialist result behind roughly a 1-in-12 roll: characters like Chrollo, Neon Nostrade, and Kurapika’s Emperor Time are the exceptions, not the rule.

Why can’t I use every Nen type equally?

Aptitude falls off with distance around the Nen hexagon. You perform your own category at 100%, the two adjacent categories at about 80%, the two that are two steps away at 60%, and your opposite category at only 40% — and Specialization can’t be trained by anyone but a natural Specialist. This is why an Enhancer like Gon can learn Emission and Transmutation reasonably well but struggles with Conjuration and Manipulation, and why fighters specialise in what their birth affinity favours.

Is this Nen type generator canon-accurate?

Your personal result is a fun, deterministic assignment — not an official designation. What is canon is everything it draws from: the six Nen categories, the water divination reactions, the hexagon of affinities and their percentages, the personality archetypes, and the notable users are all sourced from Hunter x Hunter. The reference charts on this page are generated from that same dataset the tool rolls with.
