How to work out the signatures for a hand-bound book

Two numbers in, and the last step is the one that saves you a ruined print run.

  1. Enter the number of pages, not sheets

    One sheet folded in half gives two leaves and therefore four pages, so a book is always a multiple of four. Count pages the way the finished book will be numbered and let the calculator work back to paper.

  2. Pick how many pages go in each signature

    Four, eight, sixteen and thirty-two are the standard choices, and a custom value is fine as long as it is a multiple of four. Fewer, fatter signatures mean less sewing; more, thinner ones fold flatter and sit better in the spine.

  3. Decide what happens to the last signature

    Books rarely divide evenly. “Equal signatures + blanks” keeps every gathering identical and pads the final one with blank pages, which is the easier sew. “Shrink the last signature” trims it to the smallest multiple of four that still holds your real pages — less wasted paper, at the cost of one thinner fold at the back.

  4. Set the paper weight to get a spine thickness

    The presets use roughly 0.1 mm per sheet at 80 gsm, 0.11 at 90 and 0.14 at 120. Caliper varies by brand and finish more than weight alone suggests, so if the spine measurement matters, stack twenty sheets of your actual paper, measure, divide, and type that in as a custom value.

  5. Print the cheat sheet and impose by hand

    The sheet lists, for every physical page you will feed through the printer, which four page numbers go on it and which side each belongs to — the first sheet of a sixteen-page signature carries 16 and 1 on the front and 2 and 15 on the back. It tells you the order; it does not rearrange a PDF for you, so pair it with an imposition app or hand it to the copy shop.

What this bookbinding signature calculator does

Give it a total page count and a signature size and it splits your book into signatures, works out the blank filler pages needed to fill the last fold, estimates the spine thickness from your paper weight, and — most usefully — prints the booklet page order for every physical sheet. That per-sheet book imposition is the part that trips up first-time binders: fold a stack of paper in half and the page numbers have to be printed out of order so they read correctly once folded and nested. Signatures, sheets, and pages per signature

One sheet of paper folded once gives four pages (two on each side), so a signature is always a multiple of four. Sixteen and thirty-two are the common folds because they balance a comfortable stack thickness against the number of folds you have to sew. Choosing your pages per signature is a trade-off: bigger signatures mean fewer sewing stations but a thicker, harder-to-fold bundle; smaller signatures fold crisply but add sewing work. Whatever you pick, the tool reports how many signatures the book breaks into and how many sheets that is in total.

Blank pages and the last signature

Unless your page count divides evenly, the last signature will have a few blank pages. That is normal in bookbinding — the blanks become endpapers, a colophon, or simply breathing room. When the final signature would be more than half empty, the calculator offers to shrink it instead: the last fold drops to the smallest multiple of four that still holds your real pages, saving paper at the cost of one uneven signature. Both options are shown so you can decide.

Reading the imposition table

For each signature the table lists every sheet with the two page numbers to print on its front and the two on its back. This is the same order used for saddle stitch imposition and fanbinding: print double-sided, fold each sheet in half, and nest the sheets of one signature inside each other with the lowest numbers outermost. Do that signature by signature and the finished stack reads in order from page one.

How do I print a booklet at a copy shop?

Bring the printable cheat sheet. Print each sheet double-sided, flipping on the long edge, then fold every sheet in half and nest the sheets of one signature inside each other with the lowest page numbers on the outside. Sew or staple through the fold, then bind the signatures together. Ask the shop for double-sided (duplex) printing on the paper weight you chose for the spine.

What are the blank pages for?

Because every signature is a multiple of four pages, a page count that does not divide evenly leaves a few blank pages in the last signature.
