Minecraft Potion Chart

Interactive Minecraft potion chart: pick a potion for its full brewing step chain, look up any ingredient in reverse, and read every base, extended (Redstone) and level-II (Glowstone) duration — including the 1.21 Trial Chamber potions. Java 1.21.

Quick answer

To make a potion in Minecraft, add Nether Wart to a Water Bottle for an Awkward Potion, then add the effect ingredient — Blaze Powder for Strength, Sugar for Speed, a Ghast Tear for Regeneration. Add Redstone Dust to extend the duration, Glowstone Dust to boost the tier, and Fermented Spider Eye to corrupt a potion into its opposite. Pick any potion below for its full brewing path.

The Interactive Minecraft Brewing Chart

A flat wall chart makes you trace lines with your finger. This Minecraft potion chart does the work for you: choose the potion you want and it draws the complete brewing path as a step chain — Water Bottle → Nether Wart → Awkward Potion → ingredient → your potion — with the exact item for every stand slot and the base, extended, and level-II durations underneath. Flip to By ingredient and it works in reverse: tap Blaze Powder, a Ghast Tear, or Fermented Spider Eye and see everything that ingredient brews.

Brewing always starts the same way. Fill a glass bottle at water, add Nether Wart to make an Awkward Potion, then add one effect ingredient. The Awkward Potion is the base for nearly every recipe — the Mundane and Thick potions you sometimes get by accident are dead ends with no effect. Blaze Powder both fuels the stand and brews Strength, so it is worth stockpiling.

How to Make Potions in Minecraft: Modifiers

Once a potion is brewed, four more ingredients change what it does. Redstone Dust extends the duration, Glowstone Dust raises the tier (Speed I → Speed II) for a shorter time, and the two cannot be combined in one potion. Gunpowder turns any potion into a throwable Splash Potion, and Dragon’s Breath turns a Splash Potion into a Lingering Potion — the base for tipped arrows.

Every column is computed from the tool's own brewing graph — the ingredient is the final brewing step, and the last column is what Fermented Spider Eye corrupts the potion into. Weakness, Slowness, Invisibility and Harming are themselves corruption products, so their ingredient reads Fermented Spider Eye.

The Fermented Spider Eye Corruptions

Fermented Spider Eye is the trickiest ingredient in any brewing guide because it does not add an effect — it inverts one. On a plain Water Bottle it brews Weakness. On finished potions it flips Swiftness and Leaping into Slowness, Night Vision into Invisibility, and both Poison and Healing into Harming. That is why Slowness and Harming each have two brewing routes, and why the reverse-lookup view lists four different potions under one ingredient.

Bottle Modifiers at a Glance

Potion modifiers (added after brewing)

IngredientWhat it doesDetails
Redstone DustExtend durationLengthens the effect (e.g. Speed 3:00 → 8:00). Cannot combine with Glowstone in the same potion.
Glowstone DustAmplify tierRaises the effect a level (e.g. Speed I → Speed II) for a shorter time. Cannot combine with Redstone.
Fermented Spider EyeCorrupt effectInverts a potion into its opposite — Speed → Slowness, Night Vision → Invisibility, Poison/Healing → Harming.
GunpowderMake it splashTurns any potion into a Splash Potion you can throw to affect others in an area.
Dragon's BreathMake it lingeringTurns a Splash Potion into a Lingering Potion that leaves a cloud — also the base for tipped arrows.

Redstone and Glowstone go in the top slot on a finished potion; Gunpowder and Dragon's Breath change its form. Tipped arrows are crafted from a Lingering Potion surrounded by arrows.

Building a Brewing Setup

Serious brewers keep a Nether Wart farm on soul sand, a stack of blaze powder for fuel, and a stocked ingredient chest so any recipe on this chart is one trip away. Heading to the Nether for Ghast Tears, Blaze Powder, or Glowstone? Plan the trip with the Nether portal calculator so your portals link where you expect. Trading for bottles, Redstone or Glowstone instead of mining it is often faster — the Minecraft villager trading chart shows which villager sells what, and the Minecraft circle generator helps lay out a round brewing room. Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make a Potion of Strength in Minecraft?

Add Nether Wart to a Water Bottle to brew an Awkward Potion, then add Blaze Powder — that gives a Potion of Strength (+3 melee damage) lasting 3:00. Add Redstone Dust to extend it to 8:00, or Glowstone Dust to upgrade it to Strength II for 1:30. Blaze Powder also fuels the brewing stand, so keep some spare.

What does Fermented Spider Eye do in brewing?

Fermented Spider Eye corrupts a potion into its opposite. Added to a plain Water Bottle it makes Weakness; on a finished potion it flips Swiftness (Speed) and Leaping into Slowness, Night Vision into Invisibility, and both Poison and Healing into Harming. It is the only ingredient that turns a helpful potion into a harmful one.

How do you make splash and lingering potions?

Brew the potion first, then add Gunpowder to turn it into a Splash Potion you can throw. Add Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion to make a Lingering Potion that leaves an effect cloud on the ground — and Lingering Potions are what you combine with arrows to craft tipped arrows.

What are the new potions in Minecraft 1.21?

The 1.21 Tricky Trials update added four Trial-Chamber potions, all brewed from an Awkward Potion: Oozing (Slime Block — spawns slimes on death), Weaving (Cobweb — spreads cobwebs on death), Wind Charged (Breeze Rod — a wind burst on death), and Infested (Stone — a chance to spawn silverfish when hurt). Each lasts 3:00 and cannot be extended or amplified.

How do you make a Potion of Weakness?

Weakness is the one effect potion you brew straight from a Water Bottle: just add Fermented Spider Eye (1:30, or 4:00 with Redstone). No Nether Wart needed. A Splash Potion of Weakness plus a Golden Apple is how you cure a zombie villager.

What is an Awkward Potion used for?

An Awkward Potion (Water Bottle + Nether Wart) has no effect on its own — it is the base for almost every useful potion. Mundane and Thick potions are dead ends with no effect, so if a recipe seems broken, check that you started from Awkward and not one of those.

Can you brew a Potion of Luck in survival?

No. The Potion of Luck has no brewing recipe and cannot be made in survival — it is only available through the creative inventory or the /give command. Every other potion on this chart is fully brewable in survival Java 1.21.
